Hi their, im going to write a hournal (or maybe meny journald of tricks or exprcises ive use to help imporove my writing skills.
here is the first one :
(Oh and just so you know i got these in a book but i added my own twist to it, youll see and the book i got these from is called what if)
Exorsise:
writing an opening line can be hard, a good way to jump this barrior is to practise, heres a helpful trick to help.
from the examples below:
(Taken from the book)
Have a look at these opening lines, what can you tell about the story situation, charactor, geography, setting,, class, education, potential conflict etc from reading the title and opening lines. What descision has the author allready made about point of view, distance, settings, tone etc? notise how many of the titles are directly related to the first lines of text
EXAMPLES :
(ALSO TAKEN FROM THE BOOK)
The lady with the dog (Anton Chekhov)
"They were saying a new face on the esplaned: a lady with a pet dog".
Gesture (John Updick)
"She told him with a little gesture he had never seen her use befour"
Judjment (kate wheeler)
when Mayland Johnson dies he wants to be buried with the body of a twelve year old girl
(more examples avalible in the book + tuns more information on starting a sentance^_^)
Now write 5 of your own opening lines for 5 diffrent stories.
when reading look for opening lines that immediantly pull the writer into the story. And if you keep a journal of note book, consider adding a new section and adding a new first sentance every day- for ever.
The objective
(taken from the book)
To get into the habbit of starting your stories in the middle of things. because you are not obligated to finish these stpries this exorcise lowers the emotional stake and helps to shake up and surprise the imagination.
ok as i promised id add my own spin on this
so now that you have your 5 begining lines i want you to pick your favourite and try and write a short story, at least 500 words, and give it a title. Try and give the story a twist
doing this can help with structure, charactor building and story plotting, so go ahead give it a try

Here are the 5 i wrote:
Reach into the sky:
I looked up into the cloudless blue sky, and streched my arms out as far as they could reach. I could feel a slight breez as i watched a seagul fly by.
(this is the one ive wrote the short story on heres the kezf.deviantart.com/art/Reach-… to it)
Missing you:
He sat the card and flowerd by her door, hoping she would get it bafour the rain.
Enemy:
After a few seconds he brought his headout of the sink and wiped the water off his face, he looked into the mirror and saw the harted in his eyes, Hatred for his own reflection.
Run away:
My shoes were tied, my bags were packed, and it was close to midnight. The fokes are asleep, and they left the key in the lock, its almost to easy.
by your side:
The coupel walked side by side in silence, just enjoying one anothers company. He took her hand in his and squesed it gently, she returned this gesture with a soft smile, the smile that gave him butterflys in his stomach.

The Makings of greatness
probably wondering about the title, we'll 3 years ago i posted a short story called the makings of greatness, acualy it's not a short story at all it's a prieview to a novel i've been planning to write for the pasr 5 years.
now, about this: I've been planning this novel for 5 years, every note book I own has a page about this story in it, the story I have planned to a T. The chapters, the format, basicly every final detail...completly planned, (well I have had 5 years)
YET...I cant write it...
why? I dont know, i know exactly how it will go, practicly have every parragraph planned out, almost every line! yet I cant write it.

Awesome . What's this book called ? It seems very helpful .
I use to be clueless when it came to starting off a story, but now I have no problem. I guess I just work out where the setting is and then just make the character do their thing .
